Facebook’s Gaming app for iOS and Android is shutting down a little over two years after it launched. In a notice sent to users, Facebook says the app will no longer work or be available to download starting on October 28th, 2022.
Popular Twitch streamer Gothalion shared a screenshot of a new message that has appeared on the app sharing the shutdown news and warning users to download any search data while they still can.
"Beginning on October 28, 2022, the Facebook Gaming app for iOS and Android will no longer be available," the post said.
The app launched in April 2020 toward the start of the COVID-19 pandemic as a way for users to watch their favorite streamers, play instant games and take part in gaming groups. Facebook experienced some hurdles trying to launch the app, as Apple rejected the app numerous times, citing its rules that prohibit apps with the main purpose of distributing casual games. Apple’s rules forced Facebook to remove actual gameplay functionality from the app.
Facebook has a lot invested in its gaming platform — and so do streamers. The platform scored exclusivity deals with creators, like DiguisedToast (who has since left the platform), Brazilian footballer Neymar Jr., and Grand Theft Auto roleplayer Ramee.
Facebook's parent company Meta is still locked into gaming in other ways, perhaps most prominently with its Meta Quest VR headset. It's also reportedly planning to release two more gaming headsets by 2024 alongside two work-focused ones too.
